The thing that I hate about Glee is that it pits its fans against each other and breeds such rampant hate that I have been honestly ashamed to be a part of the fandom on multiple occasions.
We have tags literally filled to the brimming with passionate bashing of characters that are supposed to be teenagers. Teenagers. Not super villains or bigots or rapists or serial murderers. Teenagers.
This show is supposed to be about acceptance, and yet I’d go out on a limb and say that the Glee fandom might be one of the least accepting fandoms of them all. Now, this isn’t me saying we’re all secretly homophobic bigots. This is me saying that, as a fandom, we do not accept each other.
"Kurt stans" (I use quotation marks because these so called "Kurt stans" are to the Kurt fandom as the Tea Party is to the Republican Party) call Blaine abusive - which is absolutely insulting to anyone who’s experienced abuse in a relationship, mental or physical. I don’t like Rachel very much myself, but some of the things that I’ve seen said about her make me sick. Kurt gets shipped with almost every character on the show, and yet members of some of the fandoms of these ships get angry and mean when it’s suggested that Karofsky and Kurt running off into the sunset probably isn’t a possibility in canon as currently established. Shippers of canon pairings have this weird superiority complex that turns even the most reasonable person into a lunatic when confronted with a contrasting opinion of any sort.
We need to learn to coexist! If we don’t, the Glee fandom is going to get more and more fucked up until we tear ourselves apart from within. I’ll be the first to say that I will not be sticking around long enough to see that.
